    A laceration is a cut or tear in the skin. Repair can be done with bandages, sutures, or “superglue”.

    Setup (MA)

    • Complete demographics portion of consent form.
    • Verify if allergy to iodine or Betadine.
    • Ensure all supplies are available and in procedure room.
    • Verify if needs tetanus booster and notify provider if needed.

    For sterile field

    MA will get supplies. Provider will then prep sterile field, unless MA is trained to do so.

    • Chux (procedure underpad)
    • Alcohol wipes
    • Syringe 5mL with needle, 18 g x 1” (for drawing medicine)
    • Needle, 27 g x 1” (for administering)
    • Lidocaine (type above)
    • Betadine swabs
      • Substitute Chloraprep swabs if allergic to iodine or Betadine.
    • Sterile saline
    • Sutures (specify)
    • Dermabond
    • Steri-strips (1/4” and 1/2")
    • Dressing supplies
      • Bacitracin
      • Sterile Telfa dressing to cover sutures
      • Gauze for over Telfa
      • Tape
      • Bandage scissors
    • On request
    • Syringe attachment for preventing splashes
    • Large syringe for irrigating

    Procedure (Provider)

    Before

    • After reviewing procedure with patient, have patient sign consent form.
    • Using sterile technique, place appropriate items on sterile field.
    • Confirm allergies.
    • Perform time out immediately before procedure.

    After

    • Remove all sharps from work stand and place in sharps container.
      • Do not delegate this task.
    • Order tetanus booster, if needed.

    Dressing (MA or Provider)

    • Dress wound.
    • Give patient after-care instructions.

    Post-procedure (MA)

    • Give tetanus booster, if ordered.
