An IUD (intrauterine device) is a small device that is placed into the uterus in a procedure similar to a pap to help (more than 99% effective). This effect is reversed by removing the IUD.

- Complete demographics portion of consent form.
- Verify if allergy to iodine or Betadine.
- Ensure all supplies required are available and in procedure room.

- Single tooth tenaculum
- Allis forceps
- Ring forceps
- Straight Kelly forceps
- IUD string scissors
- Endometrial cell sampler
- IUD hook
- Uterine sound (plastic)
- Cervical os dilator (Os Finder)
- Gauze 4x4s (sterile)
Prepped on non-sterile counter
- Consent form (demographics completed)
- PPE (see above)
- Chux (procedure underpad)
- Speculum with light
- Water-based lubricating gel (KY jelly)
- Betadine swabs
- Substitute Chloraprep swabs if allergic to iodine or Betadine.
- Large cotton swabs (“Scopettes”)

- Cytobrush, on request for difficult IUD removal *

Procedure (Provider)
Before
- After reviewing procedure with patient, have patient sign consent form.
- Using sterile technique, place appropriate items on sterile field.
- Confirm allergies.
- Perform time out immediately before procedure.
After
- Remove all sharps from work stand and place in sharps container.
- Do not delegate this task.
