An abcess is a pocket of pus. The treatment is to open it up and allow the pus to drain.

Setup (MA)
- Complete demographics portion of consent form.
- Verify if allergy to iodine or Betadine.
- Ensure all supplies are available and in procedure room.
For sterile field
MA will get supplies. Provider will then prep sterile field, unless MA is trained to do so.
- Derm Procedure Pack
- Tissue forceps
- Straight Kelly forceps
- Straight mosquito forceps
- Curved mosquito forceps
- Iris scissors
- Needle holder
- Fenestrated sterile drape
- Gauze 4x4s (sterile)
- Scalpel (type above)
Prepped on non-sterile counter
- Consent form (demographics completed)
- PPE (see above)
- Chux (procedure underpad)
- Alcohol wipes
- Syringe 5mL with needle, 18 g x 1” (for drawing medicine)
- Needle, 27 g x 1” (for administering)
- Lidocaine (type above)
- Betadine swabs
- Substitute Chloraprep swabs if allergic to iodine or Betadine.
- Iodoform gauze (1/4” and 1/2”)
- Dressing supplies
- Bacitracin
- Sterile Telfa dressing to cover wound
- Gauze for over Telfa
- Tape
- Bandage scissors
On request
- Saline (and container)
- Large syringe for irrigation
Procedure (Provider)
Before
- After reviewing procedure with patient, have patient sign consent form.
- Using sterile technique, place appropriate items on sterile field.
- Confirm allergies.
- Perform time out immediately before procedure.
After
- Remove all sharps from work stand and place in sharps container.
- Do not delegate this task.
Dressing (MA or Provider)
- Dress wound.
- Give patient after-care instructions.
