Endometrial Biopsy (EMB)

To obtain a sample of tissue from the lining of the uterus ("endometrium").  Often used to help determine cause of abnormal uterine bleeding.

In advance (Huddle)

• MA to confirm supplies needed with provider.

PPE

• Sterile gloves
• Gown
• Eye protection
• Surgical mask

Setup (MA)

• Complete demographics portion of consent form.
• If ordered: Complete urine pregnancy test and document results in EHR.
• Verify if allergy to iodine or Betadine.
• Ensure all supplies required are available and in procedure room.

For sterile field

  • Allis forceps
  • Ring forceps
  • Straight Kelly forceps
  • IUD string scissors
  • Endometrial cell sampler
  • IUD hook
  • Uterine sound (plastic)
  • Cervical os dilator (Os Finder)
  • Gauze 4x4s (sterile)

Prepped on non-sterile counter

• Consent form (demographics completed)
• PPE (see above)
• Chux (procedure underpad)
• Speculum with light
• Water-based lubricating gel (KY jelly)
• Betadine swabs
  •   Substitute Chloraprep swabs if allergic to iodine or Betadine.
• Large cotton swabs “Scopettes”
• Silver nitrate and/or Monsel’s solution
• Biopsy order
• Preprinted labels
• Formalin specimen bottle
• Feminine pad

Procedure (Provider)

Before

• After reviewing procedure with patient, have patient sign consent form.
• Order UPT if possibly pregnant. Confirm results of pregnancy test.
• Using sterile technique, place appropriate items on sterile field.
• Confirm allergies.
• Perform time out immediately before procedure.

After

• Remove all sharps from work stand and place in sharps container. 
  • Do not delegate this task.

Post-procedure (MA)

• When procedure is complete, prepare specimen for lab and send.
