Colposcopy is a procedure to closely examine the cervix (the opening to the uterus) and the vagina. This is done after a pelvic exam or Pap test reveals abnormalities. A device called a colposcope is used to magnify the image. In some cases, a cervical biopsy is taken (a small sample of tissue for exam in the lab).

- Consent form (demographics completed)

- Chux (procedure underpad)
- Speculum with light
- Water-based lubricating gel (KY jelly)
- Acetic acid 5%, in urine cup
- Lugol’s iodine solution, 10-20mL in urine cup
- Large Cotton Swabs “Scopettes” (or Junior?)
- Small wooden q-tip x2
- Silver nitrate and/or Monsel’s solution
- Formalin bottle x3
- Black Sharpie
- SFL form?
- Feminine pad
Procedure (Provider)
Before
- After reviewing procedure with patient, have patient sign consent form.
- Order UPT if possibly pregnant. Confirm results of pregnancy test.
- Using sterile technique, place appropriate items on sterile field.
- Confirm allergies.
- Perform time out immediately before procedure.
After
- Remove all sharps from work stand and place in sharps container.
- Do not delegate this task.
Post-procedure (MA)
- If biopsy specimen taken: prepare specimen for lab and send.
